Christmas came early for me today with a trip out to Alton. My neighbour and fellow N gauger, Ray, his wife Jean, my wife Georgia and I took a drive over to Alton Model Centre, somewhere I’d never been to before. Its a great model shop predominantly laid over to model railway gear. I had heard they have a second hand ‘catacomb’ and wanted some more GWR coaching stock. I also had an inkling to get another loco. (Not that I am suspicious, but I had 13 locos and was keen to get to 14).
Whilst browsing through their display, the very friendly and helpful assistant pointed out a box of newly arrived stock and gave me a sneak preview, a dcc fitted Peco Collett, Br black late crest. The last two Colletts I’d been following on ebay went for £130 and £170, way more than I was prepared to pay. This beauty needed a bit of a clean and service, which the shop did there and then before we parted with £105, my wife buying it as an early christmas present for me.
I also bought three 2nd hand GWR coaches, a SR pillbox brake van, a scale ruler to use for scratch building and a sheet of 2mm stone plastic card. All in all a very worthwhile trip and a model shop I will definitely be visiting again and can thoroughly recommend to anyone in the Surrey / Hampshire area. And as an added bonus, its right next to the Watercress Line.
